Upon returning from backpacking in Europe, Lorelai and Rory embark on a week of mother/daughter activities, in bittersweet anticipation of Rory going away to Yale as a freshman.

Mother and daughter move Rory into her dormitory at Yale, where she meets a strange new roommate, Tanna, and learns that her old adversary, Paris, will also be sharing her room.

At her first Yale party, Rory encounters twins who were instructed by Emily to keep her safe. Meanwhile, Lorelai and Sookie cater a kids' "Lord of the Rings"-themed birthday party.

While Rory visits Stars Hollow for the weekend, Dean awkwardly invites her to his wedding the next day. Lorelai and Sookie try to get construction started on the Dragonfly Inn.

Rory goes on her first date since Jess and finds that college dating isn't going to be easy. Lorelai invites Luke over for the traditional movie night she used to share with Rory.

Richard's business partner, Jason "Digger" Stiles, surprises Lorelai when he asks her out to dinner. Meanwhile, Rory has a tough time finding a decent place to study at Yale.

Stars Hollow hosts a festival in which the townspeople present tableaux imitating famous paintings. Lorelai helps calm Sookie. Luke's wife, Nicole, wants to postpone their divorce.

Rory's scathing review of the Yale ballet makes her the lead ballerina's target. Jason gets himself invited to Friday night dinner so he can continue flirting with Lorelai.

Lorelai decides to stop worrying about Emily's feelings and accept Jason's dinner invitation. Richard introduces Paris to a former classmate of his, now a Yale professor.

While Lorelai and Sookie work on renovating their new inn, Michel clashes with a rival. Meanwhile, Lorelai happily spends a romantic night at Jason's house, despite his quirks.

Lorelai realizes Luke is reluctant to move to another town and admits that she doesn't want him to leave. Meanwhile, Rory learns that a fellow student is gossiping about her.

Lorelai reconsiders telling her parents about her relationship with Jason. Paris confesses to Rory that her affair with the professor is becoming serious.

Stranded in Stars Hollow for car repairs, Jess keeps crossing paths with Rory. An unsuspecting Emily asks Jason and Lorelai to pretend they're a couple at a charity dinner.

Rory is horrified when a professor suggests that she drop a class. Meanwhile, a frustrated Lorelai first accuses Sookie of not doing her fair share then turns to Luke for help.

Rory encounters Dean at the Dragonfly Inn and gets a glimpse of his new life. Later, Lorelai and Rory run into Emily at the mall and are caught up in her wild shopping spree.

When Gran dies suddenly, Richard has a breakdown. Emily later finds Gran's old letter begging Richard not to marry Emily, and Lorelai must take over the funeral preparations.

Rory and Paris travel to Florida for their first spring break and see a couple of their pals from Chilton. Meanwhile, Lorelai's relationship with Jason takes another step forward.

Jason's father, Floyd, sues Jason and Richard for taking his clients. Floyd also reveals that Jason and Lorelai have been dating secretly for months.

Lorelai confronts her father about his treatment of Jason. Later, Lorelai and Rory make a shocking discovery about the elder Gilmores' marriage.

Luke listens to a self-help tape and realizes that he already knows who his soul mate is. Meanwhile, Lorelai is completely stressed as opening day at the Dragonfly Inn approaches.

At Liz's Renaissance-themed wedding, Lorelai and Luke share a romantic dance. Meanwhile, Rory attends a drunken party and has to call Dean to drive her back to the dorm.

Amid a friends-and-family test run of the Dragonfly Inn, Luke tries to declare his true feelings for Lorelai. Meanwhile, Rory attempts to salvage her friendship with Dean.
