Jean, a deserter from the Colonial Army, arrives in Le Havre and seeks somewhere to hide before leaving the country. Thanks to an amicable tramp, he finds refuge in a hut at the harbor where he gets to know an unusual painter and Nelly, a pretty young girl with whom he falls in love. Just when he thinks that he is saved, a tragic stroke of fate comes to take him away, in spite of Nelly's passion.
