In the premiere episode, Doug's kingdom comes under attack when his recently widowed father-in-law, Arthur (Stiller), moves in rather than go to a retirement home, turning Doug's TV room into Arthur's bedroom.

While poring over an old photo book, Arthur shows Doug a picture of Carrie's mother, and Doug is stunned at how overweight she became as she aged.

Carrie's new job in a posh Manhattan law firm keeps her working late, and when her very handsome new boss gives her a ride home in his snazzy sports car, Doug is a little worried.

Doug can't understand why Carrie refuses to agree to a double date with Richie and his wife, Marie.

Doug's Aunt Sheila (guest star Brenda Vaccaro) comes to visit after separating from her husband. Doug is horrified when Arthur, smitten with Aunt Sheila, asks permission to "woo" her.

Carrie feels bad that Arthur has no friends and encourages Doug to take him out and do things with him. Doug reluctantly lets Arthur tag along and discovers that Carrie is grateful for Doug's generosity. Really grateful.

When Carrie takes her engagement ring into a jeweler to be cleaned, the jeweler informs her that it is a rare and unusual ring, and worth a lot of money.

Carrie, afraid that their marriage has gotten boring, signs them up for a class at the community college. Thinking that it will make them more intellectual, she chooses a class on the Victorian novel.

Doug runs into Ray at the DMV, where both are renewing their licenses. When Ray copies Doug's answers, Doug ends up losing his driver's license.

Carrie has it all planned: run into the supermarket for three turkey TV dinners and run out again.

At the same time, Carrie's sister, Sara, a wannabe actress, decides to move in to save some money until she gets her big break, and suddenly, Doug has a large family in a small house and a big television in a tiny bedroom.

Much to Doug's dismay, Carrie insists that Spence needs a woman in his life, and things actually begin to work out for Spence -- until Doug convinces him that it's time to "heat things up" in the relationship.

Doug and Carrie are all dolled up and ready to go to Carrie's friend's wedding when Doug discovers Carrie's little secret: Years ago, before Doug and Carrie met, the groom and Carrie were lovers.

When Doug tries to remedy the situation, he ends up playing right into the scheming neighbors' hands and walking the dog himself. Meanwhile, Arthur is convinced that the Peanuts' comic strip is based on his life.

Carrie is so depressed about turning 30 that she doesn't even want to go out, which is lucky for the forgetful Doug who had ordered a pay-per-view wrestling match before realizing what day it was.

Wanting to be alone with Doug, Carrie forces Arthur (Stiller) to go to the Valentine's Day dance for seniors.

When Doug realizes that Carrie's ticket will cause their car insurance to double, he suggests that she go out on a date with the cop so that he'll drop the charges.

When the shift supervisor at IPS suddenly dies and Doug gets his job, Carrie is thrilled with the newfound status and raise.

Doug has a day off and makes plans to hang out with Richie, who is feeling bad about his divorce. But, when Ray Barone invites Doug to play golf at an exclusive country club, Doug ditches Richie for Ray.

Carrie isn't the least bit jealous because she knows that her husband is a nice guy, so Doug tries to provoke her by proving he's not so nice.

Carrie is invited to attend an elegant cocktail party at her boss' home and she really wants Doug to come with her. However, when he arrives late, half dressed and starving, she is mortified.

When the peculiar neighbors announce that they are separating and have a Hamptons time share that they are willing to give away, Carrie will stop at nothing to get it.

Doug and Carrie can't get a moment's peace with Arthur always hanging around the house, so Doug gets fed up and convinces his cousin Danny to take Arthur for the weekend and put him to work in his pizza restaurant.

Doug's patience with Arthur's eccentricities is rapidly eroding, especially after Arthur almost gets Doug fired for using his IPS truck to move furniture. In a rage, Doug tells Arthur how he really feels about his insane behavior.
